Nick Dazang, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) deputy director for public affairs, has said the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) risk not taking part in the Edo state governorship election, slated for September 10, if the leadership crisis was not resolved soon, Premium Times reports.
Dazang made this known on “Political Platform,” a programme on Ray Power FM Radio Station, on Thursday, June 2, said the commission’s delegation
According to him, parties participating in the election were expected to hold their primary elections between June 2 and July 4 to pick their candidates.
He said: “I expect that a very responsible party, a formidable party for that matter like the PDP will put its acts together in time for it particularly to collect the forms for those that will conduct the elections in Edo and Ondo and also to conduct the primaries that will lead up to who will now be their standard bearer for Edo governorship election to be conducted on Saturday September 10.
“The primaries are supposed to take place between June 2 and July 4. So, we expect that between now and then the PDP should be able to resolve some of these issues in the interest of that election.”
INEC has said the PDP risk not taking part in the Edo state guber poll slated for September 10 if the leadership crisis was not resolved soon
Dazang also warned the disputing groups not to resort to court to resolve their differences because such would be time consuming.
He said: “In this instance when we are pressed for time if the parties in the dispute resort to court, it is going to take long it before the issues are resolved and they collect these forms.
“So we advise that they resolve some of these issues in good time to collect the forms so that they can hold the primaries and the candidates that will contest under their platform can emerge. They have between now and 4th July to do that.
“We normally encourage them. We have a department that relates particularly with the political parties to ensure the processes we laid out and articulated in the timetable and schedule of activities are strictly and religiously followed and we expect them to that.”
Dazang also encouraged the other parties, apart from the PDP and the All Progressives Congress, to field candidates in the governorship election,
“so that the contest will be very keen and the debate also will be robust and healthy as has happened in the past in Edo state.”
Dazang also disclosed that INEC was yet to take a position on the leadership crisis rocking the PDP.
He said: “The PDP, as we have said is in a state of flux. In spite of what happened in Port Harcourt, the Commission was there because it was invited and by law we are supposed to be invited 21 days to a convention or congress.
“We sent a high powered team led by a national commissioner to monitor the convention. They have submitted their report as at now but the Commission is yet to take a position in terms of who is supposed to be the chairman of the party.”
Sheriff had fallen out with the leadership of the party in Port Harcourt on Saturday, May 21, after realizing that his bid to stay in office till 2018 was heading for the rocks.
He had announced the suspension of the PDP convention, asking delegates to leave for their various states, but Uche Secondus, deputy national chairman of the party, stepped in and the exercise went on as scheduled.
The convention not only inaugurated the caretaker committee, but also dissolved the national executive committee led by Sheriff, and the national working committee.
The caretaker committee was given three months to steer the affairs of the party, and conduct election before leaving. This had annoyed Sheriff, who sought legal redress. Although, Senator
Makarfi affirmed that there was no injunction against his caretaker committee.
However, confusion erupted in the party following different court rulings after the Federal High Court sitting in Lagos and Port Harcourt, gave conflicting rulings on the status of the party’s leadership.
In Port Harcourt, Justice A.M. Liman stopped Sheriff from parading himself as the chairman and directed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to recognise the Makarfi-led caretaker committee.
While in Lagos, Justice Buba held that the Sherrif-led executive should remain in office until the suit is determined. He ordered the police to ensure that the order is enforced. Justice Buba declared the Makarfi-led caretaker panel a nullity
The headquarters of the party has been taken over by the police as a result of the crisis rocking the party.
However, the warring factions of the PDP on Thursday, May 26, resolved after a meeting, to support the Senator Ahmed Makarfi-led caretaker committee of the party.
At the end of a meeting brokered by the Board of Trustees of the party at the Transcorp Hi-ton Hotel in Abuja, the factions in the party urged all entities of the party in court to allow for a peaceful resolution of whatever grievances they might have.
