IT was indeed a celebration of hard work and artistic excellence as eminent Nigerians, colleagues, friends, among them, Mrs Dolapo Osinbajo, the wife of Vice President, Osun State governor, Rauf Aregbesola and others poured encomiums on lawyer, politician and author Ladi Soyode for his latest literary work entitled Shadows of Whispers, a collection of soul inspiring poems. The well attended event held at the Muson Center Lagos could be described as a book launch with a difference as it was spiced up with lots of performances which brought out the real artistic life of the author as a man who has transversed many areas of life. Apart from the main purpose of the day, which was the book presentation, the entire hall was turned into an art centre. The entire venue from the vouyer to the main hall was adorned with beautiful art works and photographs and inside the hall was a jazz band that reeled out tunes to the audience with poetic performances. It was indeed a real celebration of art at its best and the viewers had a field day. The occasion kicked off with a viewing of the art works by her excellency, Mrs Dolapo Osinbajo, wife of Vice President, who was the guest of honour and her entourage, and thereafter the launching of ‘Shadows of a Whisper’, a soul searching art work from the stables of Cupid Homes of the Artz which followed. Speaking in his capacity as the chairman of the occasion, Osun state governor, Rauf Aregbesola who was represented by Mr Lateef Ibirongba described Ladi as a good person who applies himself in what ever he does. “What Ladi has done today shows that there is still a way for Nigeria to go. By writing literature he has demonstrated that there is hope for Nigeria.” Continuing he noted that presently, there is a disconnect between art and literature. Adding that, “Home videos and films which have taken over now as works of art cannot last. But it is only the book that can”. He later congratulated Ladi for his efforts and charged him not to relent. In her remarks, the guest of honour, Mrs Dolapo Osinbajo, the wife of Vice President, who is a sister to the author commended Ladi for his exploits in life. “I am proud of him, for he has chosen to express himself in poetry, prose, music.” Mrs Osinbajo who described the book, Shadows of Whispers as shadows of today’s reality took the audience down memory lane, as she narrated some of the things they did during their early years. According to her, “the book reminds me of who we are, where we came from, that is the Soyodes, the Awos, so we can not keep silent.” She concluded by singing one of the songs they normally sing during their little years; “Ladi I hear your shadows.” In the review tagged, Trapped in the Dialectics of Contrasts and Contradictions: A phenomenological reading of Ladi Soyode’s Shadows of Whisper, the book reviewer, Professor R. Adebayo Lawal described the 113 page book published by Cupid Press as a hybrid collection of eighty-two (82) seminal poems conceived within a tripartite structure – “Brevity”, “Verse” and “Prose-poems”, a categorisation which appears somewhat idiosyncratic but for which the author can conveniently enjoy the much-bandied poetic license. He stated that right from the outset that all the three sections easily qualify as poetry in the finest sense of the art, pointing out that the author used his creative capacity to package maximum meaning into the minimum medium, to convey most messages with the least language. The author, Ladi Soyode, a passionate nature lover who is of the view that a poet has a message said , “I believe that the poet has a message that he needs to pass to the society. Some of them are things that are understood by people, some are things they understood later. In ancient days people with such gifts were challenged to pass messages to the society, and the messages are in different aspects of human existence, so basically I write because I have a message.”
