The Conference of Alumni Association of Nigerian Universities, CAANU, has called on the National leadership of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, to reconsider it’s ongoing action in the interest of University education in the country.
A statement issued by the National Chairman, CAANU, Dr Ahmed Tijjani Mora, on Thursday, said the conference was of the opinion that a nationwide strike at this time when universities were resuming was not be in the best interest of the nation.
Dr Mora, who is also the National President of the Ahmadu Bello University Alumni Association, further called on the leadership of ASUU to exploit established avenues before proceeding on the nationwide strike.
“With the strike, it is the parents and or guardians as well as the students in our Universities that will suffer most especially as many students have already reported in their respective Universities and have registered for the 2016/2017.
“Academic session, and indeed lectures have began in some departments and as such, the strike could destabilize academic programs in the nation’s Universities,” the statement explained.
The statement appealed to ASUU to suspend the strike and continue to dialogue with the Federal ministries of Labour and Employment and that of education towards amicable resolutions of its areas of dispute with government.
CAANU equally urged the Federal government to expedite action on resolution of the contending issues in the interest of sustainable development of the educational sector.
