Chelsea vs Liverpool Match Preview, Team News, Possible Lineups, Key Stats + Other EPL Fixtures
9/28/2018
Today's game will be like a replay of the Carabao Cup fixture that was played on Wednesday night.
Chelsea vs Liverpool
English Premier League
Date: Saturday, 29th September 2018
Kick-off Time: 17:30 - Nigerian Time
Venue: Stamford Bridge (London).
English Premier League leaders Liverpool will take on Chelsea for the second time this week at Stamford Bridge.

The game comes just days after the Blues hammered the Reds with 2-1 to edge them out of the Carabao Cup.

Liverpool are off to a flying start to the new season and find themselves perched at the top of the standings, having won each of their six games so far. Their last league game ended in a resounding 3-0 victory over Southampton. However, there was a blip earlier this week, when they crashed out of the Carabao Cup. Manager Jurgen Klopp and his team will be out for revenge against the Blues following the midweek loss as they look to strengthen their hold at the top of the table.

Chelsea, on the other hand, dropped points for the first time this season when they were held to a goalless draw by local rivals West Ham United last Sunday.

Following the result, they find themselves in the third spot in the table, two points below their today’s opponents.

TEAM NEWS:

Chelsea made eight changes from the draw with West Ham for the Carabao Cup match at Anfield, and having appeared from the bench in that game it seems likely Eden Hazard, N’Golo Kante and David Luiz will be among those to return to action. Kepa Arrizabalaga will start in goal, but Pedro is a doubt as he fights to get over the shoulder injury he suffered in the win at PAOK. Antonio Rudiger is also expected to miss out with a groin injury, which could allow Gary Cahill to retain his place in defence, particularly given Andreas Christensen hobbled off in the Carabao Cup match.

Liverpool also made eight changes for the Carabao Cup fixture between these two, including Fabinho making his debut in midfield and World Cup finalist Dejan Lovren returning from injury for his first start of the season. Long-term absentee Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is definitely out, while Divock Origi – who has not featured this season anyway – and Adam Lallana are both doubtful through injury. Virgil van Dijk was not risked in mid-week due to a rib injury but could return in defence, where he will partner one of Lovren, Joel Matip and Joe Gomez.

TEAM FORM:

Chelsea lost the Community Shield 2-0 to Manchester City but have bounced back superbly, winning all but one game – last weekend’s stalemate with West Ham - since. Their last home game saw Eden Hazard score a hat-trick in a 4-1 defeat of Cardiff – Willian scoring the other – before the Brazilian scored the only goal to down PAOK. Sunday’s 0-0 with West Ham ended their winning record, but Emerson and Hazard helped Chelsea come from behind  to beat Liverpool in the Carabao Cup.

Liverpool - After starting the season with seven consecutive wins, the defeat to Chelsea was Liverpool’s first since the UEFA Champions League final. Among their recent wins was the 2-1 victory at Wembley against Tottenham Hotspur, when Gini Wijnaldum and Roberto Firmino scored, and Firmino then scored a 90th-minute winner at home to PSG after Daniel Sturridge and James Milner had earlier fired Liverpool into a two-goal lead. Last time out in the league, the Reds scored three first-half goals – an own goal, and one each for Joel Matip and Mo Salah – to beat Southampton 3-0, but the winning streak ended in the 2-1 defeat to Chelsea in the Carabao Cup in mid-week, despite Sturridge opening the scoring against his former team.

POSSIBLE LINEUPS:

Chelsea (4-3-3): Kepa Arrizabalaga; Cesar Azpilicueta, Andreas Christensen, David Luiz, Marcos Alonso; N Golo Kante, Jorginho, Mateo Kovacic; Willian, Alvaro Morata, Eden Hazard.

Liverpool (4-3-3): Alisson; Trent Alexander-Arnold, Virgil van Dijk, Joel Matip, Andy Robertson; James Milner, Naby Keita, Giorgino Wijnaldum; Sadio Mane, Mo Salah, Roberto Firmino.

KEY STATS:
  • Wednesday’s Carabao Cup match was the 180th meeting between the two teams, and Chelsea’s 63rd win in this fixture.
  • Liverpool have won 77 and there have been 40 draws and they have lost 63.
  • Liverpool have not beaten Chelsea since September 2016, however – a 2-1 win at Stamford Bridge – with two 1-1 draws and two defeats since.
  • Last season, Willian grabbed a late equaliser after Mo Salah’s opener in a draw at Anfield, before Olivier Giroud scored the only goal of the game in a 1-0 Chelsea win at Stamford Bridge in May.
  • In a run stretching back to the 2012 FA Cup Final, Liverpool have only won three of their last 17 matches against Chelsea (drawn seven, lost seven).
  • This is the most-played fixture in English football in the 21st century, with Chelsea and Liverpool facing each other on Saturday for the 58th time in that period.
  • Liverpool are looking to win their first seven games to a top-flight campaign for only the second time. The only side to win their opening seven games to a Premier League campaign were Chelsea in 2005/06.
  • Chelsea could win their opening four home matches of a Premier League campaign for the first time since 2014-15 under Jose Mourinho.
  • Liverpool have only won one of their last eight away Premier League games against fellow ‘big six’ opponents.
  • Liverpool have beaten Chelsea just three times in the last 17 meetings, and have now lost the last two – at Stamford Bridge in the league in May, and on Wednesday in the Carabao Cup.
  • Indeed, those two losses mean Chelsea are the only English team to have beaten Liverpool since a loss to Manchester United in March.
  • Among the returning players will now be the world’s two most expensive goalkeepers, Kepa and Alisson, and it could come down to the two of them. Kepa has three clean sheets in his last four games.
