Liverpool vs Southampton Match Preview, Possible Lineups, Key Stats, Prediction + Other Saturday's EPL Fixtures
9/21/2018
Liverpool's fine start to the English Premier League 2018-19 season continued on a magical night at Anfield in their 3-2 win over Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday night.
Liverpool vs Southampton
English Premier League
Date: Saturday, 22nd September 2018
Kick-off TIME: 15:00 Nigerian Time
Venue: Anfield (Liverpool).
Referee: Paul Tierney
In EPL, they start play in second this weekend on 15 points having won all of their matches to date.  They only trail Chelsea on goal difference, but they could be back above them by the time the Blues kick off on Sunday.

The Reds have been able to keep a clean sheet in the last 7 home games. Moreover, they have been winning at both half time and full time in the last six EPL games.

Southampton, meanwhile, have a very large task on their hands here.

They have played a fairly soft schedule to open the campaign, but they only have five points via a win and two draws to show for it.

13th place is probably something few Saints fans will want, but it might just be something they'd take right now after last season's flirtation with the drop.

They've finally found a threat again in from of goal in the form of Danny Ings, but the Englishman won't be available this weekend.

That puts them in a major bind here against a team that can score bundles of goals on their day.

TEAM NEWS:

Liverpool Jurgen Klopp is likely to stick with the same side that defeated PSG on Tuesday night until Wednesday's tie with Chelsea in the EFL Cup.  He will still be missing center midfielders Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Adam Lallana and center back Dejan Lovren, all of which came from Southampton at some point in time in the past.

Southampton manager Mark Hughes' biggest spot of bother here is that loanee Danny Ings cannot play against his parent club.  That puts the manager in a really tough spot at Anfield, a situation that is already difficult enough to deal with. As if that isn't tough enough to deal with, likely second-choice striker Manolo Gabbiadini will have to have a late test to check if his hamstring will hold up for the contest.

TEAM FORM:

Liverpool have won each of their last five matches. They played 3-2 home win against Paris St.Germain in the UEFA Champions League, won 2-1 win at Spurs, 2-1 at Leicester, 1-0 home win against Brighton 2-0 and also 2-0 win at Crystal Palace.

Southampton have a draw, two wins, and two losses in their last five matches:  They played 2-2 home draw against Brighton,  2-0 win at Crystal Palace, 1-0 win at Brighton in the EFL Cup, 2-1 home loss against Leicester and 2-1 loss at Everton.

POSSIBLE LINEUPS:

Liverpool (4-3-3): Alisson; Alexander-Arnold, Gomez, van Dijk, Robertson; Keita, Milner, Wijnaldum; Salah, Mane, Firmino.

Southampton (4-4-2): McCarthy; Soares, Vestergaard, Hoedt, Bertrand; Elyounoussi, Lemina, Hojbjerg, Redmond; Long, Austin.

KEY STATS:
  • Across 85 meetings, Liverpool have a big edge over Southampton. They have won 41 times, drawn 21 times, and lost 23 times to date.
  • Each of the last six fixtures played between the two sides have ended with at least one side failing to score.
  • The four clean sheets in a row by Liverpool against the Saints in the EPL is their longest run against a team in the league.
  • Southampton have just three wins in 19 tries at Anfield.
  • With a victory, Liverpool would start the top flight with six wins in a row for just the third time in history.
  • Liverpool have two draws and a win with Paul Tierney as referee so far.
  • The Saints have two losses, a draw, and a win in four matches.
 PREDICTION:

Liverpool 2-0 Southampton Okay, this is going to be somehow tough for the Reds even though they look strong and focused at this moment. They remain the favorites to win this game. However, there may not be so many goals in this one unlike their last tie.  Southampton has been conceding easily. They can't be measured to the current strength of the home team and I don't see them scoring any goal in this game. But if they are lucky enough, it will not be more than one goal. But all the same, I see this game ending in over 1.5.
