Barcelona’s winless run has continued after being held to a home draw against Athletic Bilbao. Meanwhile, Real Madrid missed another chance to overtake Barcelona at the top of La Liga as they tied with Atletico Madrid in the Madrid derby.
Barcelona 1 - 1 Athletic Bilbao
Ernesto Valverde’s gamble of resting Lionel Messi backfired as Barcelona made it three games without a victory after being held to a 1-1 draw at home to Athletic Bilbao on Saturday.
Messi came on in the 55th minute at the Camp Nou and it was the Argentinian’s shot that was turned in by another substitute, Munir El Haddadi, with six minutes left to play.
By then, however, Oscar De Marcos had given Bilbao a deserved first-half lead and despite a late rally, Messi and Barca could not find a winner.
After drawing at home to Girona and being beaten by Leganes, Barca will head to Wembley to face Tottenham in the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday on the back of three games without a win.
The last time Bilbao took a point at the Camp Nou, Valverde was sitting in the away team’s dug-out, in 2004, during his first spell as Bilbao coach.
Real Madrid 0-0 Atletico Madrid
Real Madrid missed another chance to overtake Barcelona at the top of La Liga as they tied with Atletico Madrid in the Madrid derby on Saturday.
Gareth Bale missed a good first half chance and went off injured at half-time, while both Thibaut Courtois and Jan Oblak made some good saves as the goalkeepers won out.
Antoine Griezmann and Diego Costa were denied by Courtois when through on goal, while Marco Asensio should have scored but Oblak was equal to his effort.
Real move level with Barcelona at the top of the table on 14 points, while Atletico are fourth with 11.
Eibar 1 - 3 Sevilla
Two supporters were carried away on stretchers and two others suffered minor injuries after part of a stand collapsed in Sevilla's win at Eibar.
Spanish media reported that railings gave way as supporters rushed to the front to celebrate Ever Banega's penalty for 2-0 at the Ipurua Municipal Stadium.
The La Liga match was stopped for six minutes as fans received medical attention.
Sevilla players, who were close to the incident when celebrating the goal, were unaffected.
On-loan Andre Silva put Sevilla ahead and Banega scored twice before Joan Jordan's late consolation for Eibar.
Real Sociedad 0 - 1 Valencia
Kevin Gameiro struck to hand Valencia their first win of the season against Real Sociedad.
After their heroics last season which saw them qualify for the Champions League and cause problems for the usual top three in Atletico Madrid, Barcelona and Real Madrid – Los Che have struggled to find that form this time round.
But, they stuck to their guns on Saturday at the Anoeta and grabbed all three points.
