Sebastian Vettel has defended his lunge on Max Verstappen at the Japanese Grand Prix that robbed him a chance of at least a podium.
Vettel started the race well in Suzuka after climbing from eighth to fourth, before launching an ambitious pass on the inside of Spoon, which resulted in a damaged barge board and him spinning off the track into last place.
Many pundits pointed the finger of blame towards the German but the Ferrari driver insisted it was Verstappen at fault, despite race stewards deeming it nothing more than a racing incident.
But his hopes look as good as over as with four races to go he must finish second if rival Lewis Hamilton wins his seventh race in eight next time out at the United States Grand Prix after the Brit triumphed at Suzuka in Japan.

"His battery was clipping, I was boosting so I knew that I would gain a lot at the end of the straight," Vettel said post-race.
"He defended so he saw me. I had the inside but then I think he didn't give me any room so I think like that you can't make it through that corner.
"Obviously it was entertaining but not what I wanted today in the last 20 laps it was fairly boring. But yeah, I don't think sixth is where we should have finished today".
Vettel eventually recovered to sixth place to ensure he still has a mathematical chance of winning the world championship.A crucial moment in the grand prix, and the title race...— Formula 1 (@F1) October 7, 2018
