Read Lucas Hernandez's Inspirational Story

Atletico Madrid and French national team defender Lucas Hernandez opened up about his difficult family situation growing up and his goals as a father.

The Frenchman propelled himself to stardom this summer with Les Bleus when he broke into the World Cup squad and cemented himself as the team's starting left back for virtually the entire tournament.

Now back with Atletico Madrid for the club season, Hernandez continues to impress, having made seven appearances already this season in all competitions. At 22-years-old, it is no small feat.

Not everything was always so wonderful for the Frenchman though, whose brother is also a professional footballer for Real Madrid, currently on loan at Real Sociedad. He recently admitted that he has not seen his father in over ten years.

Despite being on her own, Hernandez credited his mother for providing for him and his brother in order to be able to succeed as footballers in life. He put it rather simply:

"I owe everything to her.

"She's the one who brought us up, who took my brother and I to football, who worked I don't know how many hours to feed us. Who I am is thanks to her," continued the young star, speaking with French news outlet Le Parisien.

In regards to his father, he explained:

"We've not heard from our father for 12 or 13 years, not even after winning the World Cup."

Recently though, Lucas himself became a father and he expressed his desire to avoid his father's failure.

"Now that I'm a father, I'm even more aware of what he's done, that he has failed in his father's role," he said.

"What I can't imagine is giving up my son, I would never do it, and even if I have to sleep under a bridge for my son's happiness, I will."

He did not stop there, explaining: "My son Martin has changed my life, my way of thinking, of seeing the world, before I only thought of myself and now everything I do is for him. I am not the same man anymore."

It has been an unquestionably life-changing summer for the Frenchman, something he understands:

"Six months ago I didn't even know that I would go to the World Cup, but today I am a world champion and father."
