A roundup of all Sunday's German Bundesliga action...
Werder Bremen 2 - 6 Bayer Leverkusen
Claudio Pizarro became only the second 40-year-old to score a Bundesliga goal - but his Werder Bremen side were thrashed 6-2 by Bayer Leverkusen their 16-match unbeaten home run under coach Florian Kohfeldt in an eight-goal gala at the Weser Stadium on Sunday.
Leverkusen were 3-0 up when Peruvian Pizarro scored from 12 yards out - the 19th year in a row in which he has scored a Bundesliga goal.
But in the end mid-table Leverkusen ran out convincing winners against fourth-placed Werder.
Kevin Volland opened the scoring for Leverkusen before Julian Brandt doubled their lead. Karim Bellarabi made it 3-0 on the stroke of half-time.
Bremen had a mountain to climb, but they gave themselves a lifeline on the hour-mark when substitute Claudio Pizarro finished smartly from Davy Klaassen’s pass.
Match referee Marco Fritz ruled out a close-range effort from Yuya Osako for offside two minutes later, only to overturn the decision after the VAR deemed the last touch had come off Bayer’s Sven Bender.
Leverkusen were on the ropes, but a swift counter-punch and fine finish from Kai Havertz put the visitors back in the driving seat. Sebastian Langkamp put through his own net and Havertz added another, killing off the Bremen resistance with the seventh and eighth goals of an extraordinary game.
Pizarro, in his fifth spell at Werder Bremen, is the top-scoring foreign player in Bundesliga history with 193.
He has scored a Bundesliga goal in each calendar year since 1999 - despite spending 2007-08 with Chelsea - and a joint record 18 seasons.
