Manchester City showed they respect Liverpool as Premier League title contenders with their approach to Sunday’s 0-0 draw between the sides, according to Virgil van Dijk.
Having suffered defeat in the league and Europe at Anfield last season, Pep Guardiola’s men succeeded in inducing a cagier, low-tempo affair this time around.
That resulted in just two shots on target apiece for each team, with Riyad Mahrez’s late penalty miss the closest either came to breaking the deadlock.
Van Dijk believes City’s tactics were a direct result of the last year’s chastening visits to Merseyside, but does not expect the result to have too big an impact on the title race.
Asked if he was relieved to see Mahrez smash the subsequent spot-kick into the stands, he replied:

Post Summary
Having suffered defeat in the league and Europe at Anfield last season, Pep Guardiola’s men succeeded in inducing a cagier, low-tempo affair this time around.
That resulted in just two shots on target apiece for each team, with Riyad Mahrez’s late penalty miss the closest either came to breaking the deadlock.
Van Dijk believes City’s tactics were a direct result of the last year’s chastening visits to Merseyside, but does not expect the result to have too big an impact on the title race.
He said: “Obviously they were a bit cautious of the way we played and I think we have earned that respect but they still pressed and still tried to play their game.Van Dijk looked to have handed the visitors their first victory at Anfield since 2003 when he tripped Leroy Sane in the box with five minutes of normal time remaining.
“We made it difficult for them and they made it difficult for us at times but that's how it is.
“I think it is not about these games, it is all about the other games, the difficult games which we have against mid-table and lower teams.
“We want to get as close as possible and do as well as we can but we know it is going to be hard. We've had a great start to the season and we want to keep it going.
“We aim to improve every game, even if it is against Chelsea, for example, and we want to win every game.
“After the international break there are three important games against Huddersfield, Red Star and Cardiff so we want to be ready for that.”
Asked if he was relieved to see Mahrez smash the subsequent spot-kick into the stands, he replied:
“Obviously, yeah. I think to keep a clean sheet after a penalty in the last five minutes makes me a very happy man.The Dutchman was also pleased to bring an end to a taxing recent schedule that has featured two games against Chelsea, a trip to Napoli and a showdown with title rivals City.
“It was not smart from me personally and hopefully it will never happen again.
“Eighty-five minutes, you obviously get a bit fatigued, and that moment goes by in a split second and I decided to dive in, which is not what I would normally do.
“It was a decision I made and hopefully it will be the last time I make that decision at that time.”
He continued: "It was not an easy month playing against Champions League teams, it is tough week in, week out, and playing with a little injury is not easy.-From Evening Standard-
“But we all keep going and now it is internationals.”
