English football club Liverpool will kick-off their 2018/19 UEFA Champions League season against French champions Paris Saint-Germain at Anfield tonight.
Jurgen Klopp’s men, who were unbeaten in their seven Champions League home matches last season, winning five and scoring 24 goals in the process, but were beaten in the final of the competition by Real Madrid, will be aiming to start this group stage campaign with a win against an opposition as strong and star-studded as PSG.
Reds will come into the game high on confidence, having bagged 15 points in all their English Premier League matches this term, sharing the top spot with in-form Chelsea. They have beaten West Ham United, Crystal Palace, Brighton & Hove Albion, Leicester City, with the latest coming in the form of a 2-1 victory over Tottenham Hotspur.
Paris Saint-Germain also have won all of their five Ligue 1 fixtures, with a thrashing 4-0 Super Cup win over Monaco. Their last league game against St-Etienne ended in a 4-0 triumph, despite the absence of star attackers Neymar and Kylian Mbappe. And this was their seventh consecutive game where they bagged three or more goals.
TEAM NEWS:
Liverpool - Roberto Firmino is a doubt after the Brazilian forward picked up an eye injury during their weekend triumph over Tottenham at the weekend, which could hand Danny Sturridge a chance to start centrally with Mo Salah and Sadio Mane either side. Fellow strikers Divock Origi and Dominic Solanke are also doubts, having picked up injuries during the U-23s fixture. Jordan Henderson is likely to be on the bench again with Naby Keita, Gini Wijnaldum and James Milner starting. Fabinho is yet to make his competitive debut either and that is unlikely to arrive in this fixture. Adam Lallana and Dejan Lovren remain sidelined and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is a long-term absentee.
Paris Saint-Germain - Neymar missed the 4-0 league win against St Etienne last time out will return to the starting line-up at Anfield, while Kylian Mbappe will also be available for selection, having missed the league game due to suspension. Marquinhos will also return after being rested for that game. Marco Verratti is fit again, and played at the weekend, but he is suspended for the first Champions League match of the season, as is Gianluigi Buffon, after red cards. Alphonse Areola will therefore start in goal.
TEAM FORM:
Liverpool have won all five league matches they have played this season, having kicked off the new campaign with a 4-0 thrashing of West Ham, 2-0 defeat of ten-man Crystal Palace, 1-0 win over Brighton, 2-1 win at Leicester, and the Reds beat Spurs by the same score.
PSG - After beating Monaco 4-0 in the Trophee des Champions, they have made a superb start to the Ligue 1 season too – winning all five games so far. PSG beat Caen 3-0, Guingamp 3-1, Angers 3-1 and Nimes 4-2 and Saint-Etienne 4-0.
PREDICTED LINEUPS:
Liverpool (4-3-3): Allison; Trent Alexander-Arnold, Joe Gomez, Virgil van Dijk, Andrew Robertson; James Milner, Naby Keita, Gini Wijnaldum; Mo Salah, Daniel Sturridge, Sadio Mane.
Paris St-Germain (4-2-31): Alphonse Areola; Thomas Meunier, Thiago Silva, Pascal Kimpembe, Juan Bernat; Adrien Rabiot, Marquinhos; Kylian Mbappe, Neymar, Angel di Maria; Edinson Cavani.
KEY STATS:
PREDICTION:
Liverpool 2-1 Paris Saint-Germain — For me, this is going to be a BTTS and over 2.5 game. Despite the fact that Liverpool could be without one of their superstar attacking trio, with Roberto Firmino suffering an eye injury against Tottenham, it won't stop them from scoring. Given the quality of attacking players that will be on display at Anfield tonight, many goals are guarantee.
With both sides entering this fixture on the back of 100% starts to their respective league seasons, it is hard to to pick a favourite. Both boast incredible strike forces and there's a 99.9% that this game will end in draw but if I'm asked to pick a winner tonight, then I will be a full time Red. I hope they don't disappoint.

- Liverpool and Paris Saint-Germain have met just once before in European football, in the semi-finals of the 1996-97 European Cup Winners Cup. PSG won 3-0 in Paris and held on to progress on aggregate despite Liverpool winning the second leg 2-0 at Anfield.
- PSG are taking part in their 11th Champions League campaign – their seventh in a row. Only Lyon (15) have more appearances in the competition among French clubs.
- This will be Liverpool’s first meeting in the Champions League with a side from France since the 2009-10 campaign, when they lost 1-2 to Lyon at Anfield before drawing 1-1 away from home in the group stages.
