Welcome as I take you through today's early game between 2nd place Chelsea and 8th place Man United in the EPL.
It's no news that the international break is over. So, it's time to focus on weekend football!!!
Chelsea will be welcoming the red devils to the Stamford Bridge for the first game of the weekend today— early afternoon. Notably, the teams will be fresh and stronger as they play this game after the international break.
Chelsea have made a strong start to the season under Maurizio Sarri, remaining unbeaten in all competitions since losing the Community Shield to Manchester City.
They come into this game on the back of six wins and two draws in their eight English Premier League matches so far.
Jose Mourinho’s return to Stamford Bridge comes on the back of a stormy few weeks for the Manchester United boss, however. Alexis Sanchez’s last-minute winner in the stunning comeback from 2-0 down against Newcastle lifted some of the cloud but the pressure is still on.
While Manchester United ended a long winless run in this fixture by winning the last two meetings at Old Trafford, at Stamford Bridge they have not won since October 2012 – Sir Alex Ferguson’s last season in charge. They have only drawn once in the six years since too.
TEAM NEWS:
Chelsea's Antonio Rudiger’s groin problems continue – the defender having withdrawn from Germany’s squad due to injury. Ethan Ampadu picked up a knee injury while with Wales and Ruben Loftus-Cheek skipped England duty to recover from a foot injury, but neither were likely to start this one anyway. Ross Barkley, who impressed in England’s win against Spain, will hope to retain his place in midfield ahead of Mateo Kovacic, having scored his first Chelsea goal last time out. Other selection decisions for Maurizio Sarri to ponder are whether to start Pedro or Willian on the right of the front three, and which of Olivier Giroud or Alvaro Morata start down the middle.
Manchester United's Luke Shaw and Jesse Lingard are both back in training after missing England’s two matches this week, while Nemanja Matic – who withdrew from Serbia duty with an ankle injury – is also expected to be fit. Scott McTominay is a doubt, but Ander Herrera and Marcos Rojo are back in training too.
TEAM FORM:
Chelsea are unbeaten in their last 11 games – their only defeat having come in the Community Shield against Manchester City. More recently, they have won three and drawn two of their last five matches. The points dropped were a goalless draw away to West Ham and a 1-1 draw at home to Liverpool. They beat Liverpool in the Carabao Cup in between and have won both matches since, however. Alvaro Morata scored the only goal in a 1-0 Europa League win against Vidi, while Hazard, Ross Barkley and Morata netted in Chelsea’s 3-0 success at Southampton prior to the international break.
Manchester United got back to winning ways last time out, coming from 2-0 down to beat Newcastle thanks to Alexis Sanchez’s last-minute winner. Juan Mata and Antony Martial had earlier cancelled out the visitors’ early goals. It ended a four-match winless run, which included draws with Wolves and Valencia, a penalty shoot-out defeat to Derby County in the Carabao Cup and a 3-1 loss at West Ham.
POSSIBLE LINEUPS:
Chelsea (4-3-3): Kepa Arrizabalaga; Cesar Azpilicueta, Andreas Christensen, David Luiz, Marcos Alonso; N Golo Kante, Jorginho, Ross Barkley; Pedro, Olivier Giroud, Eden Hazard.
Man United (4-3-3): David de Gea; Ashley Young, Chris Smalling, Victor Lindelof, Luke Shaw; Juan Mata, Nemanja Matic, Paul Pogba; Marcus Rashford, Romelu Lukaku, Alexis Sanchez.
KEY STATS:
Chelsea 1-2 Manchester United — First and foremost, this game is ending in over 2.5. And although the Blues have a good recent home record against under-pressure Red Devils, I see Mourinho proving to the world while he's the special one in the game of football.
