Paul Gascoigne's Scottish Hall of Fame Nomination Withdrawn
10/11/2018
England legend Paul Gascoigne has had his nomination for the Scottish Football Hall of Fame suddenly withdrawn just days before he was due to be inducted.
Gascoigne, 51, was listed for an awards dinner at Hampden Park a week on Sunday after being proposed by the public and chosen by a panel. But controversially the name of the former Rangers star will no longer be put forward, with the Hall of Fame's committee citing 'concerns over the state of Paul's health'.

However, this follows reports that a number of the Scottish Football Association's board members were set to boycott the dinner because of concerns over Gascoigne's suitability for the honour. His association with incidents of domestic abuse, racism and sectarianism led some SFA members to turn down their invitation to the ceremony.

They believed they could not endorse his induction after the negative publicity he has attracted in recent years.

During his time at Ibrox, the midfielder incurred condemnation from women's groups following an assault on his former wife Sheryl at Gleneagles Hotel in 1996.

Battling alcohol and mental health problems, he was also fined £1,000 (N480,470) in September 2016 for racially aggravated abuse of a black security guard at an Evening with Gazza event in Wolverhampton.

In August, Gascoigne was questioned by British Transport Police over allegations of inappropriately touching a woman on a train. And last month internet footage emerged appearing to show him sing along to a sectarian song at a supporters' event in Alloa.

Although the SFA have no direct power in selections for the Scottish Football Hall of Fame, their response clearly made an impact on organisers who decided to shelve Gascoigne's induction.

A statement by the Hall of Fame read:
"Further to consultation with the Chair and members of the Scottish Football Hall of Fame committee, due to a number of factors including ongoing enquiries, and concerns over the state of Paul's health, it has been decided to withdraw the nomination of Paul Gascoigne at the time from this year's nomination process."
Gascoigne was set to become the latest non-Scottish player to receive the honour: following his former England team-mate Terry Butcher, Danish playmaker Brian Laudrup and Celtic striker Henrik Larsson.

The former Tottenham midfielder joined Rangers from Lazio in the summer of 1995 and won both Scottish player of the year awards in his first season.

He left for Middlesbrough in March 1998. His first appearance at Ibrox during a pre-season friendly clash with Steaua Bucharest saw him make an inflammatory flute gesture - an act he repeated at Celtic Park three years later.

The awards dinner takes place on Sunday, 21 October at Hampden Park, Scotland.
