Real announced the sacking of Julen Lopetegui on Monday night.
Sportmediaset says Conte has been the frontrunner for some time with reports in recent weeks suggesting he is set to step into the breach. But he has now decided against taking over the role at the Bernabeu.
It is suggested Conte had doubts over the support of key dressing room figures. No individual names are mentioned but the opposition to Conte's appointment has made the Italian think again.
