CAF Strip Cameroon Of 2019 AFCON Hosting Rights

CAF Strip Cameroon Of 2019 AFCON Hosting Rights
11/30/2018
Cameroon has been stripped of the right to host next year’s Africa Cup of Nations after serious delays with its preparations and in the midst of a violent separatist rebellion near two planned venues.
The Confederation of African Football made the decision on Friday after a meeting of its executive committee.

Its president, Ahmad Ahmad, announced a new bidding process was to be opened.
"Today we took the decision to withdraw the 2019 CAN from Cameroon," said CAF president Ahmad told a press conference in Accra, Ghana.

"I know that there are countries which are interested, rest assured, candidate countries will come forward."
He was speaking after a 10 hour CAF executive meeting held behind closed doors in the Ghanaian capital.

Countries have until the end of December to submit bids for the tournament, which starts in June.
CAF also released a statement on their official website saying: "After significant debate and having received detailed updates from numerous inspection visits over nearly 18 months, CAF has noted that a number of compliance conditions have not been met.

"In addition, after having heard from representatives of the governmental and sports authorities of Cameroon, and reviewed the latest progress on preparations, CAF notes the gap between the requirements of hosting the AFCON and realities on the ground.

"Furthermore, after hearing the conclusions of the CAF Security Inspection Team during their most recent visit to Cameroon, CAF concludes that the Africa Cup of Nations could not be exposed to any issues that could impact on the success of the most prestigious African competition.

"After having considered that a simple postponement of the tournament was impossible because of CAF’s contractual commitments, and the importance of maintaining the competition calendar, the CAF Executive Committee decided that the next edition of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations could not be held in Cameroon.

"This decision, without appeal, will mean that CAF will now initiate an open and urgent call for new host country bids to ensure AFCON 2019 takes place next summer.
"CAF will ensure that a new host is in place by 31st December 2018, and it will communicate openly and transparently on the process and subsequent decision."
Morocco, which lost out to a joint United States-Canada-Mexico bid for the 2026 World Cup, has been touted as a replacement host.

CAF said in September that there was a “significant delay” with the building of stadiums and related infrastructure but gave Cameroon a final chance by planning two more inspection visits in October.

One of those was to assess the security situation after an escalation in violence in the south-west and north-west of the country involving English-speaking separatists and government forces.

What will now happen to Cameroon? Will they still get automatic ticket to participate in the competition next year?
