Liverpool will take on Red Star Belgrade in their fourth Group C encounter of the 2018-19 UEFA Champions League.
Liverpool have a great chance to extend their lead at the top of Group C, when they take on Serbian heavyweights Crvena Zvezda at the Rajko Mitic Stadium this evening.
The two teams clashed last month at Anfield, when Liverpool came out on top beating their opponents 4-0.
The win catapulted them to the top of Group C, with six points from three games, while the Serbians remained rooted to the bottom of the group.
With Napoli and Paris St-Germain set to meet in Italy later tonight, the match offers the Reds a great opportunity to stretch their lead.
Liverpool come into the midweek game on the back of a highly entertaining 1-1 draw against Arsenal in the English Premier League.
Crvena Zvezda, on the other hand, have won all of their three fixtures post the battering they received at the hands of Liverpool. They are currently sitting on top of the Serbian SuperLiga table.
TEAM NEWS:
Red Star Belgrade goalkeeper Milan Borjan missed the league win at Proleter Novi Sad at the weekend, and if he misses out against Liverpool it would mean a start for Zoran Popovic between the sticks. Veljko Simic and Dusan Jovancic are set to return after being rested at the weekend.
Liverpool's Xherdan Shaqiri has not travelled to Belgrade for political reasons, after the Albanian-born Swiss international sparked anger during the World Cup when he celebrated his goal against Serbia by referencing the Albanian flag in his celebration. Naby Keita is out with a hamstring injury, while Dejan Lovren was not in the squad at the weekend, as Joe Gomez returned at centre-back. Jordan Henderson has missed the last two games, with Fabinho, Gini Wijnaldum and James Milner the midfield three.
TEAM FORM:
Red Star Belgrade are unbeaten in domestic competition so far this season, but have lost twice in three games in the UEFA Champions League group stage – both away from home. The 4-0 defeat in the reverse fixture is their only loss since losing 6-1 at Paris Saint-Germain, but they have won all three league games since. Milan Pavkov and Dusan Jovancic scored in a 2-0 win at Macva Sabac, before Pavkov opened the scoring in a 3-1 defeat of ten-man Backa Palanka – Marko Gobeljic and Veljko Simic scoring the other two. Last time out, away to Proleter Novi Sad, Red Star won 2-0 courtesy of an own goal and Ben El Fardou’s strike.
A draw with Arsenal at the weekend continued Liverpool’s unbeaten start to the league season but it did end their three-match winning streak. Either side of the reverse fixture against Red Star, Liverpool beat Huddersfield 1-0 through Mo Salah’s strike and won 4-1 at home to Cardiff – Salah, Xherdan Shaqiri and a Sadio Mane double making the difference. Against Red Star, it was Salah to the double, with Mane and Roberto Firmino also netting. James Milner was their goalscorer at the weekend, before Arsenal came back to draw 1-1.
POSSIBLE LINEUPS:
Red Star Belgrade (4-2-3-1): Zoran Popovic; Filip Stojkovic, Srdjan Babic, Milos Degenek, Milan Rodic ; Dusan Jovancic, Nenad Krsticic; Ben El Fardou, Veljko Simic, Marko Marin; Milan Pavkov.
Liverpool (4-3-3): Alisson; Trent Alexander-Arnold, Joe Gomez, Virgil van Dijk, Andrew Robertson; Georginio Wijnaldum, Fabinho, James Milner; Roberto Firmino, Mo Salah, Sadio Mane.
KEY STATS:
Red Star Belgrade 0-3 Liverpool — Sitting at the top of their group, a win today would be a huge step towards qualification to the next round for Klopp’s brigade, especially considering that they will be facing Napoli and PSG in their next fixtures.
