Former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger hopes Mesut Ozil can be convinced to come out of international retirement as Germany still need him.
The 30-year-old Arsenal playmaker called time on his international career this summer following the four-time world champion’s abysmal finals campaign in Russia.
Wenger, who brought Ozil to north London in 2013 and subsequently played no fewer than 196 times under the former Gunners boss, feels Germany coach Joachim Low could still do with the midfielder.
Unai Emery’s men are currently fourth in the table with six wins from eight games. Before hanging up his boots, Ozil was one of the most-capped members of Low’s squad, having played 92 international matches.
Across those outings, which spanned over five major international tournaments, he registered 23 goals whilst creating a further 40 for his teammates.
He was a key member in Germany’s triumphant World Cup 2014 campaign as well as those sides who reached three semi-finals (World Cup 2010, Euro 2012 and Euro 2016).

“I believe that Germany needs Özil. I hope that Joachim Löw can convince him that he will come back. Ozil is a super football player – he was not the worst in the World Cup. I did not love that he left the German national team,” Wenger told Bild.Ozil will be solely focusing on his Arsenal career now with the Gunners set to play Leicester City in the English Premier League on Monday night.
“I love it when the players are as good as possible. He loses a bit if he does not play at international level.”
Unai Emery’s men are currently fourth in the table with six wins from eight games. Before hanging up his boots, Ozil was one of the most-capped members of Low’s squad, having played 92 international matches.
